Arts & Crafts Conference Home Tour
Each February, the nation's premier Arts & Crafts Conference is held at the Grove Park Inn (see www.arts-craftsconference.com).  In conjunction with the conference, the Preservation Society provides architectural tours highlighting Asheville's own Arts & Crafts history.
For 2010, we scheduled afternoon tours for Saturday February 20 and Sunday February 21.  Preservation Society members and the general public were welcome to join the tours which departed from the Grove Park Inn.
About the tour
The tour included several buildings in Biltmore Forest and St. Dustan's Historic Districts.  Tour participants were able to visit the interior of several houses in Biltmore Forest.
One of the homes was designed by William Dodge, Jr. for William Knight, one of the founding directors of the Biltmore Estate Co. which developed Biltmore Forest.
This house features many handcrafted details including a spiral stairway in a tower with cantilevered runners.
Dodge himself carved window and doorframe ornamentation.  Knight was an amateur botanist who brought specimens to his property from around the world.

Another featured house was home to the Norburn family.
Designed by architect Charles Parker, it features gum woodwork throughout the interior.
Its careful restoration was awarded a Griffin Award by the Preservation Society.

A home in the St. Dunstan's neighborhood just north of Biltmore Village is a 1925 Tudor Revival Cottage with original Arts & Crafts features such as a floor-to-ceiling cherry mantel, original lighting fixtures, and all original hardware.
Tours  included on-bus guides who pointed out key buildings in Asheville's architectural history, as well as docents to answer questions in each of the homes to be toured.
Participants should be able to walk a city block and negotiate stairs.  All tours leave from the Grove Park Inn.
